Nordhavn Owner Training • 1999 • 2000

• Full on-the-water instruction on all Nordhavn systems, including:
• Single-screw maneuvering and docking.
• Electronics, including autopilot, radar, GPS, VHF & SSB radio, & sonar / depth sounder use.
• Electrical systems, generators, power inverters, breaker panels, and power management.
• Plumbing and holding tank usage.
• Paravane stabilizer deployment and use.
• Dinghy deployment.
• Passagemaking
• Heavy weather sailing in rough conditions.
• Emergency drills, such as man overboard, engine out, etc.
• Provisioning.
• Safety and waste management.
• Training done over a period of many months. Training is done as intensive 1-3 day trips, separated by owner-only trips to reinforce concepts taught.
• Training is ongoing. As of March 2000, there have already been 4 such training sorties, with several more planned for the coming months.

• Full great circle and rhumbline navigation course and distances.
• Built-in database of thousands of important coastal and island locations.
• Custom itineraries and trip plans.
• Knows about the seasons of the world and the weather that occurs in different areas, so winter storms, hurricane and monsoon seasons are all automatically taken into account during route planning. If a leg of a trip would venture into an area at the wrong time of year, the leg is automatically postponed until better weather conditions prevail. This automatic weather calculation feature provides a new level of safe trip planning, and is a first in navigation planning software. It is currently unavailable in any commercial software available at any price.

• Seamlessly integrated with Nav tool.

• From US Naval Observatory algorithms, implemented long-term almanac navigation software for a variety of handheld and desktop computer systems.
• Software was published in my book On Macintosh Programming: Advanced Techniques, Addison-Wesley: Reading, Mass, 1990.
• Fully proficient in celestial navigation using sextants for reliable bluewater passagemaking.
• All software created in the C Programming Language to run on Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, and on Macintosh and Power Macintosh systems.
• Scaled down versions of Nav and Sun have been written in RPL to run on handheld HP-48SX, HP-48GX, and HP-49G calculators, which are very useful at sea.

• Chartered an Island Packet 29 sailboat.
• Five day trip from Anacortes, to Victoria BC, to Sequim, Deception Pass and back to Anacortes.
• Used mooring buoys as well as guest docks at night.
• Dealt with thick morning fog conditions.

• Chartered a Hunter 35.5 sailboat.
• Four days in the San Juan Islands, with stops at Parks Bay, Open Bay, Decatur Head.
• Anchored in bays each night.
