Day 1: Seattle to London

Back to Germany overview

Our trip began with a long trip from Seattle to London aboard a British Airways 747-400. It was our first time aboard a 747. Unfortunately it was full and thus was cramped and hot.

Here we see our plane as it arrives at Seattle a few hours before we took it to England. Note the fuel truck in the foreground: this plane holds 57,285 gallons of fuel and weighs 875,000 pounds fully loaded!

After being inspected, x-rayed, and our passports checked, we then waited another 2 hours before the plane boarded. Then it was time to go!

My cute wife leading us down the jetway...

Here we are in our bulkhead seats (11A&B) before we left the gate at 6:35 PM.

We were crammed in. Next time I'll pay extra for Business Class.

Each seat had its own TV to watch. Along with several movies to choose from there was channel 12, the navigation channel which showed where we were in real time. Pretty slick! Here we are over Hudson Bay. It was dark for most of the flight.

One of the several screens that channel 12 featured was this one, showing our altitude, speed, and the outside air temperature.

Some of the data readouts of channel 12. They also showed in metric units.
